The Story You're Living:Why Your Past Doesn't Have to Decide Your Future
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Every one of us is living a story. Some of those stories inspire us to dream bigger, take bold risks, and believe that our future can be greater than our past. Others quietly keep us stuck—stories shaped by childhood experiences, disappointment, rejection, failure, or the expectations placed on us by other people.
But what if the greatest limitation in your life isn't your circumstances...it's the story you've come to believe about yourself because of those circumstances?
In this episode of Transformative Living Radio, Andre Flax explores how our identity shapes our decisions, our confidence, and ultimately the direction of our lives. Through personal reflections from his journey growing up in Camden, New Jersey, along with practical coaching insights, Andre challenges listeners to examine the beliefs they've accepted and invites them to reclaim the authority to write a different future.
You'll discover:
- Why your identity has a greater influence on your future than your circumstances.
- How limiting beliefs quietly become the stories that shape your decisions.
- The subtle ways we give away our personal authority without realizing it.
- Three powerful coaching questions to help interrupt victim thinking and reclaim ownership of your life.
- Practical steps for becoming the author of your next chapter instead of a prisoner of your last one.
Your past may explain where you've been, but it never has to determine where you're going.
If you've ever felt trapped by your history, discouraged by your circumstances, or uncertain about what's possible for your future, this conversation will encourage you to see yourself—and your life—from a completely different perspective.
Because lasting transformation begins the moment you stop letting yesterday write tomorrow's story.

Welcome to Transformative Living Radio, where we explore the power of intentional change for personal growth and fulfillment. I'm Andre Flax, your host and certified life and leadership coach. There once was a man who inherited an old house from his grandfather. The house had been in the family for generations. It was sturdy, well built, and full of memories. But over the years it had fallen into despair. The wallpaper was faded, the windows were covered with years of dust, the furniture was worn, and every room seemed darker than it should have been. One afternoon, a friend came to visit. After walking through the house, the friend smiled and said, You know, this place has incredible
The House That Still Has Potential
SPEAKER_00potential. The owner laughed and said, You must be looking at a different house than I am. No, his friend replied, I'm looking at the same house. The difference is I'm seeing what it could become instead of what it has been. The owner looked around again. For years, he had only seen what was broken. He noticed the peeled paint but not the solid foundation. He saw cracked walls but overlooked the craftsmanship beneath them. He focused on years of neglect and completely missed the possibility of restoration. That day, nothing about the house actually changed. The windows were still dusty, the walls still needed repair, the work ahead was still the same. But something inside the owner changed. For the very first time, he stopped seeing the house through the lens of its history and started seeing it through the lens of its potential. And that shift in perspective became the beginning of its transformation. And you know, I think a lot of us live our lives the same way. We've become so familiar with our past that we mistake it for our future. We begin seeing ourselves through the disappointments we've experienced, through the mistakes we've made, through the labels we've accepted, through the circumstances we've survived. After a while, we stop asking what's possible because we've convinced ourselves we already know the answer. We don't just remember what happened to us, we begin to identify ourselves through it. And without realizing it, we start living inside a story we never consciously chose. And that's what I want to talk about today. So grab a pen and a pad, and if you're ready, let's begin. Hello and welcome to another empowering episode of Transformative Living Radio. I'm Andre Flax, your host and certified life and leadership coach. You know, I don't believe most people are limited by their circumstances. I believe they're limited by the identity they've accepted because of those circumstances. Think about it for a moment. Two people can experience the same setback. One concludes, This is just the way my life is going to be. The other says, This may be difficult, but it doesn't get the final word over my future. Same circumstance, different identity, different future. One person
Circumstances Versus Accepted Identity
SPEAKER_00lives from what happened, the other lives from what is still possible. And that's the heart of today's conversation. Today we're going to explore how the stories we've accepted about ourselves quietly shape our decisions, our relationships, our confidence, and ultimately the direction of our lives. We'll talk about the difference between reacting to life and intentionally creating it. We'll uncover the subtle ways we give away our personal authority. And before we're done, I'll share three coaching questions that can help you interrupt victim thinking and begin reclaiming the life that has always been yours to create. Free Coaching Session Invitation
SPEAKER_00and people from every walk of life is that people rarely make decisions based on what's possible. They tend to make decisions based on who they believe they are. Think about that. If I believe I'm capable, I'll keep trying. If I believe I'm resilient, I'll get backup. If I believe I have something valuable to contribute, I'll speak up. But if I secretly believe I'm not enough, I'm always overlooked, I'll probably fail, then I'll begin making decisions that protect that identity. Not intentionally, but automatically. And that's
Why Beliefs Drive Your Choices
SPEAKER_00how identity works. It quietly influences our choices until one day we mistake those choices for reality. Have you ever noticed how two people can experience the same setback and walk away with completely different conclusions? One person loses a job and says, This proves I'll never succeed. While the other person says, Maybe this is opening a door I couldn't see before. Now it's the same event, but different conclusion and different future. The event didn't determine the outcome, the meaning they attached to the event did. I remember a season in my own life when I felt like everything had fallen apart. Some of you know this part of my story. There was a time when I found myself homeless. I wasn't living the life I had imagined. And if I'm honest, there were moments when I questioned everything. Moments when I wondered if maybe the stories I heard growing up were actually true. Maybe this was my future. Maybe I wasn't meant for anything more. But something happened during that season. Instead of allowing my circumstances to become my identity, I started searching for a different story. I spent hours reading, learning, studying. Not because I was trying to escape reality, but because I was trying to understand it. That's when I discovered something
Andre’s Homeless Season And A Shift
SPEAKER_00that changed my life forever. The life I was living wasn't simply the product of my circumstances, it was also being shaped by the beliefs I carried about myself. That realization was both humbling and liberating. Because if my thinking helped create the life I was living, then changing my thinking could help create a different future. Now, let me be clear. Changing the way you think doesn't magically eliminate obstacles. It doesn't erase pain. It doesn't mean life suddenly becomes easy. But it does change the way you meet your circumstances. And when you begin meeting life differently, life often begins responding differently. Now there's a quote that stayed with me for years, and that was quote, whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're probably right. End quote. Now, when most people hear that quote, they think positive thinking. But I don't. I hear it as identity. Because what you believe about yourself shapes what you're willing to attempt. And what you're willing to attempt often determines what's possible. Here's something I want you to think about. Imagine carrying a backpack filled with rocks. At first it feels heavy. Over time your body adjusts. Eventually, you stop noticing the weight. Not because it disappeared, but because you've become accustomed to carrying it. I think many of us carry invisible backpacks, filled with old labels, old disappointments, old failures, old conversations, old fears, and old expectations. We become so accustomed to carrying them that we forget that they're even there. Then one day someone says, You seem way down, and your response, nope, I'm just who I am. No, that's not who you are. That's what you've been carrying. And there's a difference. One of the greatest
The Invisible Backpack Of Old Labels
SPEAKER_00gifts you can give yourself is learning how to separate your identity from your experiences. For example, you've experienced rejection, you are not rejected. You experience failure, but you are not a failure. You've experienced loss, but you are not your loss. You experience disappointment, you are not your disappointment. You see, those experiences are chapters. They are not your identity. And when you finally stop confusing the chapter with the author, then everything begins to change. Now, when we come back, I want to talk about something that quietly steals more dreams than failure ever could.

SPEAKER_00Hey, welcome back. Have you ever noticed how easy it is to give someone else authority over your life without even realizing you've done it? Now it doesn't happen all at once, it happens quietly. One disappointment at a time, one criticism at a time, one failure
Quick Break And Coaching Details
SPEAKER_00at a time, until eventually someone else's opinion becomes louder than your own conviction. Now I want you to think about that for a moment. How many decisions have you made because of something someone said to you years ago? Maybe it was a teacher who told you that you weren't college material. Maybe it was a parent who constantly reminded you to quote be realistic. Maybe it was a coach who never put you in the game. Maybe it was someone you loved
Handing Away Authority To Other Voices
SPEAKER_00who walked away. Now the moment came, the words were spoken, the experience ended, but the story continued. And without realizing it, you handed them the pen. And from that day forward, they stopped speaking. But you kept repeating what they said. You see, that's how limiting beliefs work. They don't need someone else to keep reinforcing them. Eventually, we reinforce them ourselves. I remember coaching a gentleman several years ago who wanted to start his own business. He had the experience, he had the knowledge, he even had people encouraging him to take the lead. Yet every time we talked, he found another reason to wait. Finally, I asked him this simple question. What are you afraid of? He sat quietly for a moment before saying, I'm afraid I'll fail. I said to him, Tell me something. Has anyone ever told you that before? He looked down and he smiled and said, When I was in high school, one of my teachers told me I probably never amount to much. Think about that. One sentence spoken decades earlier, still influencing decisions today. You see, the teacher wasn't holding them back anymore. The teacher had long moved on. But the story remained. And because the story remained, so did his limitation. So let me pause and ask you this question. Whose voice are you still listening to? Whose opinion still echoes in your mind every time you're about to take a risk? Who convinced you that you're not smart enough, not good enough, not worthy enough, not capable enough? Because here's what I've learned the loudest voice in your life eventually becomes your own. If you're constantly telling yourself every day, I'm always overlooked, you'll begin overlooking yourself. If you keep saying I'm just not confident, you'll avoid every experience that builds confidence. If you believe I've always struggled with money, you'll continue making decisions from a mindset of scarcity instead of possibility. You see, every belief eventually produces behavior, and repeated behavior eventually becomes the life you're living. Sometimes when we talk about changing our thinking, people here just ignore the problem. That's not what I'm saying. I'm not asking you to deny your pain. Pain is real, loss is real, grief is real, disappointment is real, trauma is real. Life leaves marks on all of us. But there's a difference between experiencing pain and allowing pain to become your identity. One says, I've been hurt, the other says, I'm broken. One acknowledges an experience, the other adopts a definition. Those are not the same thing. You can acknowledge what happened without allowing it to become who you are. In fact, that's where healing begins. Healing begins the moment you stop introducing yourself by your wounds. Now, there's another picture that often comes to mind. Imagine someone locked inside a prison cell. Year after year, they decorate the walls, they rearrange the furniture, they make up the bed, they even paint the bars. But they never check to see if the door is locked. One day someone walks by and says, Have you ever tried turning the handle? The prisoner looks confused. I didn't know I could. The visitor smiled and said, You never asked. Now, how many of us are doing exactly that? We've become so accustomed to living within the limits we've accepted that we've stopped questioning whether those limits are actually real. You see, we organize our lives around assumptions we've never challenged.
The Prison Door You Never Tried
SPEAKER_00Assumptions like, I'm too old, I'm too young, I'm too late, I'm not educated enough, I'm not experienced enough, I'm not outgoing enough. According to who? Who wrote that story? And more importantly, why are you still living by it? Now, one of the greatest discoveries of my life was realizing that while I couldn't rewrite yesterday, I could absolutely influence what I wrote next. And that realization gave me hope because if I couldn't change my childhood, I could change my interpretation of it. If I couldn't erase my mistakes, I could decide what they meant. If I couldn't control every circumstance, I could choose the person I wanted to become within those circumstances. And that's when life began changing for me. Not because everything around me changed overnight, but because I stopped asking, why is this happening to me? And started asking, what is this preparing me for? That one question shifted everything. Suddenly, obstacles became teachers, failure became feedback, disappointment became redirection. Closed doors became invitations to look for another path. You see, the circumstances didn't immediately change, but the author did. And when the author changes, the story begins to change with them. Now I want you to hear this. You are not powerless. You may not have control over every chapter, but you still have influence over the ones you're writing today. The pit is still in your hand. The question is, what story will you write next? Now we've covered a lot of ground in this episode. We've talked about the stories we inherit, the identities we unknowingly accept, the way we surrender our authority, and we even explored what it means to become the author of a different future. Now I'd like to leave you with something practical. Not another idea, not another quote, just three questions. And I encourage you not to answer them quickly. Sit with them, journal about them, pray over them, talk them through with someone you trust. Because these three questions have the power to change the direction of your life if you're willing to answer them honestly. Question one What story have I been telling myself that no longer serves me? Now take a moment to think about this. What's the one sentence that plays quietly in the background of your life? Maybe it's I'm just not confident, or I'll never get ahead, or people always leave, or I'm too old,
Three Questions To Rewrite Your Story
SPEAKER_00I'm not qualified, or this is just who I am. Now ask yourself, who wrote that story? Was it something you decided, or was it handed to you by someone else? Because if you didn't consciously choose it, you don't have to continue living by it. Question two. What part of this situation is still within my control? Now, this question has helped me through some of the most difficult seasons of my life. You see, when life feels overwhelmed, our attention naturally drifts towards everything we can't control. Other people's choices, the economy, the diagnosis, the rejection, the uncertainty. But growth begins the moment we stop asking, why is this happening to me? And start asking, what can I do with what's in front of me? Maybe you can't rewrite yesterday, but you can choose your response today. Maybe you can't change another person, but you can change how you show up. Maybe you can't control the storm, but you can decide who you'll become while walking through it. And that's where the power lives. Question number three: Who do I want to become because of this experience? Notice I didn't ask, when will this be over? I asked, who am I becoming? You see, every challenge asks us a question. Every setback invites growth. Every disappointment gives us an opportunity to become someone stronger, wiser, more compassionate, and more resilient, if we're willing to let it. You see, your greatest breakthrough often begins with the courage to answer that question honestly. Now, before we wrap up, I'd like you to imagine standing in front of a mirror, not to look at your appearance, but to look at your life. Look honestly, without judgment, without excuses, and without pretending. Now ask yourself one final question. What part of my life have I given away authority over? Have I handed it to fear, to someone else's opinion, to my past, to a failure, to rejection, to disappointment, to circumstances, to a label I've been carrying for years? What comes to mind? Now don't condemn yourself. Simply recognize it. Because awareness is where change begins. You see, you can't reclaim what you refuse to acknowledge. But once you recognize where you surrendered your authority, you can begin to take it back. One decision at a time, one thought at a time, one conversation at a time, one courageous step at a time. Now, as I think about my own journey, from growing up in Camden to seasons of uncertainty, to moments when I question whether I was capable of becoming anything more, I've come to realize something. None of us gets to choose where our story begins. We don't get to choose our family. We don't get to choose our neighborhood. We don't get to choose many of the hardships we face. But every one of us has the opportunity to choose what those experiences will mean. We can allow them to become excuses, or we can allow them to become evidence. Evidence that we can overcome, evidence that we can grow, evidence that our past may explain us, but it doesn't have to define us. The pen is still in your hands, so write wisely, write courageously, and most importantly, don't let yesterday keep writing chapters that belong to tomorrow. Well, that's our show for today.
