Assumption: The Creative Act

What if your brain is quietly proving your fears right? We dig into the hidden power of assumptions—the invisible scripts that shape what you notice, how you act, and the results you get—by blending story, neuroscience, and practical coaching. From the reticular activating system’s role in filtering reality to the way early emotions wrote meanings you still carry, we show how identity and assumption form a loop that either limits or lifts your life.
We share Carla’s story of landing a dream presentation and walking in with the certainty of failure, revealing how protection becomes limitation when the nervous system keeps running yesterday’s rules. Then we map a clear path to rewrite the script: name the old assumption, choose one aligned with who you’re becoming, and take one confirming action. Action teaches the brain faster than thought, and repetition installs identity—so small, consistent behaviors create big, compounding proof. You’ll practice out-loud declarations to signal a new standard to your body and mind, and you’ll learn to spot the first memory where your assumption formed so you can update it with care.
By the end, you’ll have a grounded process to replace “I’ll mess this up” with “My voice adds value,” turn anxiety into steady presence, and reorient your RAS to highlight openings instead of obstacles. Confidence becomes a practiced assumption. Resilience becomes a reinforced belief. Authority stops being control over others and starts feeling like alignment within yourself. If this resonates, grab the ebook “Standing in Your Own Authority” from our show notes to reinforce the work, and try the one-action rule today. SPEAKER_01Welcome to Transformative Living Radio, where we explore the power of intentional change for personal growth and fulfillment. I'm Andre Flax, your host and certified life and leadership coach. In our last episode, we talked about the power of I am, how identity shapes reality. But in today's episode, we want to go a step deeper. Because if I am defines who you believe you are, assumptions determine how that belief plays out in real time. And it isn't just spiritual language, it's neurological. You see, your brain has a filtering system known as the reticular activating system that scans your environment for evidence of what you already believe is true. If you assume that you're not good enough, your brain highlights mistakes. If you assume people are judging you, you notice every expression. And if you assume that success is hard, you see obstacles before opportunities. It's not because life is against you, it's because your brain is loyal to your identity. So in this episode, we want to explore how your assumptions are closely linked to your self-concept and the way you perceive the world. So grab a pen and a pad, and if you're ready, let's begin. Carla was a young career professional who sat down at the local coffee shop and opened her computer to find an email that read, We like you to present. It was the opportunity she'd been waiting for. But instead of excitement, her stomach tightened. That night she barely slept. Not because she wasn't prepared, but because of the voice in her head. You know, that quiet voice that said, Don't mess this up. They're gonna see right through you. You know you really don't belong up there. Now the presentation hadn't even happened yet. But in Carla's mind, she had already assumed the outcome. The next morning she walked into the room carrying something heavy. Not fear of failure, but the certainty of it. She spoke quickly, skipped key points, apologized when she didn't need to, and when the response felt lukewarm, she nodded internally, saying to herself, See, I knew it. But here's what's painful about that. The room didn't reject her. Her assumption shaped her. Long before anyone else had a chance to. Now, maybe you know this feeling. You assume you won't be chosen, so you hold back. You assume a relationship won't last, so you guard your heart. You assume you're bad with money, so you avoid the numbers. You assume you're just not that type of person, and over time, that assumption becomes your identity. So let's take a moment to unpack how assumptions really work. Assumption is the invisible script running beneath your life. It's the meaning you assign before evidence appears. You see, you don't act from your goals, you act from your belief about yourself. If you assume that you're not leadership material, you hesitate before you speak. If you assume people will always leave, you brace before you trust. And if you assume I'll never get ahead, you stop pushing before momentum builds. And here's the thing: when life reflects the hesitation back to you, it feels like a confirmation. But all of it started from the inside. You see, you can't outwork a limiting assumption, you can't hustle past a belief you still carry. So until you question the script, you'll call your assumptions reality. Now, here's something that most people don't realize. Assumptions aren't formed logically, they are formed emotionally. Something happened, a comment, a moment, a rejection, an embarrassment. And your nervous system makes meaning. Maybe you were eight years old and you answered a question wrong and the class laughed. You feel the heat in your face, the tightness in your chest, and your brain concluded speaking up isn't safe. That wasn't weakness, that was protection. You see, emotion is first, meaning second, identity third. Now, fast forward 20 years, you hesitate in meetings not because you lack intelligence, but because your nervous system still associates visibility with risk. Or maybe a relationship uh ended unexpectedly. And in that emotional moment you decide people leave. That assumption protected you. But over time, protection becomes limitation. And here's the breakthrough. The emotion was real, but the conclusion was an interpretation. An interpretation can change. Now I want you to pause with me and think about an area where you feel small. Is it confidence? Is it handling money, relationships, your voice? What do you assume about yourself in that area? Now I want you to go deeper. When did you first feel that way? Not think it, but really feel it. Now notice the memory and notice what your body does. You see, that's where the assumption formed. You adapted, you survived, but what protected you then may be limiting you now. And the moment you see that, you reclaim power. Because what was formed unconsciously can be reshaped consciously. Now, you don't erase an assumption, you replace it. And here's how. Step one, name the old assumption clearly. For example, I assume that when I speak up, I'll be judged. Step two, choose a new assumption aligned with who you are becoming. For example, my voice adds value. And then step three, take one action that confirms it. Speak once, lean in once, engage once. You see, behavior teaches the brain faster than thought alone. Repetition installs identity. Confidence is not a personality trait, it's a practice assumption. Resilience is not genetic, it's reinforced belief. You become what you repeatedly assume and then act on. Now I'd like for you to make a declaration. So I want you to sit up for a moment. This matters. Out loud, I want you to say, I am no longer someone who blank. I want you to fill in that blank. Okay? Now say, I release the assumption that whatever that assumption is. Now I want you to step forward and say, This season of my life, I am someone who fill in the blank. And then finally, I want you to repeat, I choose to live from the assumption that, and then fill in the blank. Now, if you made this declaration, your brain heard it. Your nervous system registered it. You see, identity shifts when declaration meets action. So I want you to repeat it tomorrow and then repeat it next week. Repetition is installation, and installation becomes identity, and identity shapes your experiences. Now, before we conclude this episode, I want you to take one deep breath and exhale. You see, you didn't just listen today, you chose. You traced the origin of a belief, you questioned it, and you installed a new one. That's authority. You see, authority isn't control over others, it's alignment within yourself. It's deciding that you will not let old emotions define present identity. That's why I wrote Standing in Your Own Authority, because too many people are living powerful lives from borrowed assumptions. Now, if this resonates with you, I want you to download the ebook through the link in our show notes. Let it reinforce this work. Remember, you don't rise to your intentions, you rise to your installed identity. So install wisely, reinforce intentionally, and walk in tomorrow from the assumption that builds you, not one that limits you. Well, that's our show for today.
