Speaker 1:Now, before we get into the heart of the message today, or the lesson today, let's first acknowledge that we all experience moments of sadness and melancholy. These are normal human emotions. However, when they linger too long, they can become very overwhelming. Here's the key point your emotions serve as a signal rather than a stop sign. They convey important messages. Instead of shying away from them, we should be approaching them with great curiosity. How are you feeling right now? Are you feeling disconnected? Are you feeling disconnected? Are you carrying unprocessed grief and stress? Or are you stuck in negative thought loops? Recognizing the root cause of your sadness is the first step to working through it. And remember feelings aren't permanent. They shift just like the weather. So your job isn't to fight them, it's to learn how to navigate through them. So how do we navigate moments of sadness and melancholy? The truth is, when sadness or melancholy lingers, finding motivation can seem like an impossible task. However, making small shifts can create the momentum we need to move through it. Here are some simple yet effective strategies you can use today to help you through this process.
Speaker 1:Strategy number one is to move your body to enhance your mood. No, you don't need to run a marathon, just start moving. No, you don't need to run a marathon, just start moving. You see, research shows that movement triggers the release of endorphins, which is our brain's natural feel-good hormone. Consider taking a 10-minute walk outdoors. The fresh air and the sunlight can do wonders for your mood. Our bodies hold tension from emotions, so it's important that we learn to do stretching or some gentle yoga to help release that tension. Another thing you can do to enhance your mood is to dance to some upbeat music, even if you don't feel like it. Moving shifts your energy. Now, strategy number two is to change your inner dialogue Now.
Speaker 1:During tough times, our self-talk can become critical, so we must be mindful of the messages we convey to ourselves. Instead of saying I'm stuck, try saying I'm learning to navigate through this. Instead of saying I feel hopeless, try saying I am open to feeling better. Instead of thinking I'll never feel different, remind yourself that this is a temporary feeling and I'm taking steps to heal. Remember, your words have power and so we must choose them wisely.
Speaker 1:Strategy number three is to reach out to family, friends, mentors and coaches, even when it's challenging. You see, feelings of sadness and melancholy tend to want to isolate us. But remember, connecting with others heals us. Even if it's just a text, a short call or just sitting in a cafeteria with others, it all makes a difference. Now, when reaching out to a friend, be straightforward. Say to him hey, I'm not feeling great today. Can we talk? Now, if talking isn't an option, consider writing a letter or journalizing your feelings. Sharing your emotions can lessen their impact.
Speaker 1:Now, strategy number four is to complete one small, achievable task In moments when everything seems overwhelming. Start small, make your bed, drink a glass of water or simply open the curtains and let the light in Each small action tells your brain I'm capable and I am moving forward. So now let's shift the conversation to four practical habits that you can adopt to help you overcome moments of sadness and melancholy. Habit number one is to nourish your mind and body. You see, getting enough sleep each night is essential for maintaining overall well-being. You see, getting enough sleep each night is essential for maintaining overall well-being. The lack of rest can worsen feelings of sadness, so strive for a consistent sleep routine. Habit number two is nutrition. Your brain needs fuel, so focus on foods rich in omega-3s, vitamins and proteins. Hydration is also important to overall health. Dehydration affects moods, so it's important that you drink more water than you think you need.
Speaker 1:Habit number three is to practice gratitude. Now, it may sound cliche, but gratitude rewires the brain. Here's a gratitude exercise you may want to try Each morning write down three things that you're grateful for. If you struggle with this in the beginning, start small. Write things like I have a bed, I have a roof over my head or I'm simply here. Ideally, you want to say these things out loud. By doing so, it shifts your attitude and your mood.
Speaker 1:Habit number four is to create what is known as a feel-good toolkit. Inside this toolkit are the things that bring you comfort when sadness strikes. This could be a favorite playlist, a book or podcast that inspires you, a warm bath or your favorite tea, or even a go-to meditation or breathing exercise. Having a plan in place makes it easier to shift your emotional state when needed. Habit number five is to reach out for help when needed. At times, sadness can be profound, and that's completely acceptable. Asking for support is not a sign of weakness, rather a reflection of strength. Therapy, for example, offers resources to help you manage your emotions. Support groups can help reassure that you're not isolated, and if you sense that sadness is shifting more towards hopelessness, don't hesitate to reach out, whether to a friend or a professional. Remember you deserve to be supported.
