In today's episode, we're diving deep into understanding fear why it's there, how it develops and, most importantly, how we can take control back. We'll explore some key techniques to not only stop fear and anxiety from ruling our lives, but also to make them work for us rather than against us. So if you're ready, let's begin. Let's begin. Hello and welcome to another episode of Transformative Living Radio. I'm Andre Flax, your host and certified life and leadership coach. First, I want to thank all of our listeners for listening in each week to this podcast. Now, this is our 51st episode and I'm so happy that you're here today supporting the podcast and sharing it with those you know. Now, today's episode is all about diving deep into understanding fear why it's there, how it develops and, most importantly, how we can take control back. We'll also explore some key techniques that not only stop fear and anxiety from ruling our lives, but also to make fear and anxiety work for us rather than against us.
Speaker 1:So let's begin by starting with the basics. What is fear? Well, fear is our mind and body's natural response to a perceived threat. It's part of what has kept humans safe for thousands of years. Back then, it was essential for survival to be able to react instantly to a predator or a physical threat, but in today's times, fears don't always translate to actual danger. In our modern world, you see, our fears often arise from what could happen, and many are rooted in anxieties about the future or the judgment from others. So how do we differentiate healthy fear from debilitating anxiety? Well, think of fear as a quick response, a helpful instinct, often without much thought, meant to protect you in the moment. Now anxiety, on the other hand, is ongoing and is often rooted in worries that don't have an immediate danger attached to them, but can feel just as intense.
Speaker 1:Now, the first key to stopping fear and anxiety is to understand the power of your own thoughts. Studies have shown that simply recognizing our fear and naming it helps us to regain some control. You see, our brains are wired to focus on what we think about, which can increase stress or reduce it, depending on where we direct our attention. When fear arises, try to slow down, name it and then ask yourself is this fear based on something real or something I'm imagining? This one habit, which is to observe the fear, can help you see the difference between a real threat and one that is imagined. Now, a helpful technique for practicing this is grounding. When you feel overwhelmed by fear and anxiety, take a moment to observe something around you in detail. This could be noticing the texture of a fabric, feeling the ground under your feet or focusing on your breath. Now, this process is known as a state interrupt, which helps you break the feeling of anxiety and brings you back to the present moment, where most fears dissolve.
Speaker 1:So let's talk about the cycle of fear and anxiety. Here's how the cycle usually happens we have an imagined thought that creates the feeling of fear, which then leads to worry and anxiety, and then our mind fills with the worst-case scenarios. This amplifies the fear, creating a loop that's hard to escape from Now. One powerful tool to disrupt this loop is to practice mindfulness. When we can bring our focus to the present, we take away the fuel for anxiety. Mindfulness practices like deep breathing or meditation can calm our nervous system, allowing us to step back and see our fear from a different perspective. Try this quick exercise if you're somewhere safe where you could do it. Close your eyes Now, take a deep breath and exhale. Focus on your breath. Notice each inhale and each exhale. If a fear pops up, acknowledge it. Then gently bring your attention back to your breath. Use this quick exercise whenever you're feeling fear or anxiety and watch it work wonders for relieving your fear and anxiety in the moment.
Speaker 1:Now that we understand the cycle, let's talk about another powerful tool you could use to help you break the fear cycle, called reframing. Now, reframing is the art of looking at fear from a new angle. Now, reframing is the art of looking at fear from a new angle. Instead of asking why am I afraid, ask what is this fear telling me? Let me give you an example. Imagine you're preparing to start a new job and you feel the familiar tightness in your chest. Instead of letting fear stop you, you use it as a source of curiosity. Ask yourself what can this fear teach me? Or what would I do if I weren't afraid? Now I remember a time early in my career that I struggled with fear and anxiety. As a young sales professional, there were times when I would completely become paralyzed when meeting with high-level executives. When I would completely become paralyzed when meeting with high-level executives, however, instead of seeing my fear as a barrier, I began to view it as a sign that I needed to improve my self-image as well as my self-confidence. This simple shift in my mindset transformed my approach, turning an intimidating situation into an opportunity for my professional growth.
Speaker 1:So what are some practical strategies that we can start using today to help us to take control of fear and anxiety? The first and most important strategy is to challenge negative thoughts. You see, fear is an emotion and all emotions begin with the thought, and usually, when the emotion of fear arises within us, it's because we're thinking something negative. So the first strategy would be to write down your fears, then question each of them by asking is this really true? Challenge the validity of the negative thoughts. This really true? Challenge the validity of the negative thoughts. By doing so, you decrease the emotional energy behind the thought, allowing you to direct your attention to a positive thought. Now, if fear is stopping you from a big goal, one strategy to overcome this fear is to break down the goal into small, manageable actions. Each small wins builds confidence, reducing fear over time.
Speaker 1:Visualizing success versus failure is another powerful strategy that will help you overcome fear and anxiety. You see, our minds are prone to focus on failure scenarios. Try visualizing success instead. Imagine yourself overcoming the fear, achieving the goal and how you'll feel afterwards. You see, visualization creates a positive blueprint in your mind. Creating a supportive environment is another strategy for overcoming fear and anxiety. By surrounding ourselves with people who encourage and uplift us helps reinforce our ability to face fears with strength and courage.
Speaker 1:Now, another very important strategy for overcoming fear and anxiety is the practice of self-compassion and patience. You see, when we consistently practice being kind to ourselves and allow ourselves to be patient in the process of overcoming our fears and anxiety, we will begin to see incremental progress in our ability to identify our fear and challenge them one by one. Remember, overcoming fear isn't a race. Be kind to yourself through the process. If you take one step back, that's okay. Growth takes time. Now, believe it or not.
Speaker 1:The biggest barrier to our dreams isn't fear, it's regret. Often, fear stops us from taking action and, in turn, this leads to a lifetime of what-ifs. Imagine a life without regret. What would you do differently? It's been said that we only regret the chances we don't take. Living courageously doesn't mean being fearless. It means choosing to act even when fear is present.
Speaker 1:Now, just for a moment, I want you to think about something that you've been wanting to do but have been putting it off because of fear. Now picture your life in a year, five years or maybe even 10, if you keep letting fear hold you back. How does that feel? Now picture what your life could look like if you did face that fear. Imagine the growth, the experiences you would have and even the confidence that you would gain. You see, fear and anxiety begins in our mind and we can't just let it go. And when we are able to identify and control the negative thoughts that produce the emotion of fear and anxiety, we will be able to reduce the level of fear and anxiety we feel in the moment.
Speaker 1:Now, as we wrap up this episode today, I hope you're walking away with a clearer understanding of fear and, most importantly, how to take back control. Remember, fear is a natural part of life, but it doesn't have to control you. It's there to protect you, not to keep you from the life you want. Challenge your fears, reframe them, use them as tools for growth, not as walls that stop you from living fully. So the next time you're facing something intimidating, ask yourself what would I do if I weren't afraid? You might surprise yourself with the answer. Well, that's our show for today.
